Role: Jim is a Principal and Shareholder at Design Workshop and leads the retail/ mixed-use and entertainment work both in a planning and technical capacity with planned and built projects in the U.S and abroad. Jim is also the Executive Director of DW Shanghai Ltd. Co, overseeing office and business activities for the firm in China.

Jim is a practicing landscape architect and urban designer with a broad background and deep understanding of retail, mixed-use, and entertainment districts. For over three-decades he has led the planning and design of many notable projects in the United States including the MCA CityWalk project at Universal Studios in Southern California, Springwoods Village in Houston and the Domain Northside in Austin. More recently, he has worked on destination mixed-use districts like TAZA in Calgary, Denver International Business Center in Denver and the WASL Khalif Plaza in Dubai. His experience implementing projects in the United States, China, Canada, Dubai, Indonesia, and Mexico provides a body of knowledge for constructing projects in a wide range of cultural challenges and climates including sub-tropical regions. Jim’s leadership in the content and delivery of his team’s work has resulted in several award-winning projects, including Scottsdale Quarter, recipient of the Arizona Real Estate Council’s Best Retail Project and ICSC’s Design and Development Silver Awards and Gardens on El Paseo a recipient of an ICSC Design and Development Gold Award.
Jim received his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture degree from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo with honors and a Master of Urban Design degree from the University of Colorado at Denver where he was recognized as the outstanding graduate student in the School of Architecture and Planning. He is the recipient of other academic and professional awards and joined Design Workshop in 1996.
