Executive Director and Professor of the Practice. 2011-present.
Manage operations of the Institute; organize annual land use conference, land use workshops, and other outreach efforts; direct student research; teach Sustainable Cities Practicum.
Bennet for Colorado. 2009-2010. Volunteered as spouse/surrogate to elect Michael Bennet to the U.S. Senate. Engaged in most aspects of the campaign, including strategy development, public relations, fundraising, grassroots organizing, policy development.
Independent Consultant. 2005 to 2008. Contracted with Western Resource Advocates to serve as Co-Director of the Rocky Mountain Energy Campaign, a collaboration of conservation organizations in the Rocky Mountain Region that focused on developing and implementing strategies to address impacts associated with oil and gas development in the Rocky Mountain West. Developed and implemented strategic campaign plans, raised funding to support the Campaigns efforts, facilitated collaboration among participating groups.
Earthjustice, Denver, CO – Staff Attorney (1998-2000); Managing Attorney (2000-2005). Represented non-profit environmental groups in litigation under the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, the National Environmental Policy Act, and a variety of other environmental statutes. Managed a staff of 13, including 7 attorneys, and an annual budget of $1 million. Assisted development staff in fundraising, particularly from foundations and major donors. Worked with coalitions of clients to develop strategic litigation priorities and plans.
Comey, Boyd and Luskin, Washington, D.C. – Associate. 1996-1997. White collar criminal defense and civil litigation. Criminal practice involved representation of client against health care fraud charges, including pretrial investigation and preparation of case, drafting motions, participating in all aspects of sentencing. Civil practice involved discovery, motions practice, and trial preparation.
Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund, Bozeman, MT – Associate Attorney. 1994-1996. Represented conservation organizations in federal district court, federal courts of appeals, and before state administrative agencies; statutes litigated include the federal Clean Water Act, Montana Water Quality Act, and the Endangered Species Act. Drafted motions and briefs; presented oral argument; conducted discovery, including depositions; negotiated consent decree and compliance plan for clean-up of abandoned mine site. Worked closely with coalition of conservation organizations to develop and implement a comprehensive, and ultimately successful, strategy to prevent the permitting of the proposed New World Mine, near Yellowstone National Park.

Donovan Leisure, Rogovin and Schiller, Washington, D.C. – Associate Attorney. 1992-93. Worked on toxic tort litigation arising out of dioxin contamination. Researched and drafted motions in limine to exclude expert testimony, motion for summary judgment on piercing the corporate veil, and legal memoranda on various evidentiary issues. Researched and drafted legal memoranda regarding the Federal Arbitration Act, the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, the National Labor Relations Act, and the Ethics Reform Act.
Arkansas Attorney General’s Office, Little Rock, AR – Advocate for the Elderly. 1986-88. Organized and participated in an undercover sting investigation of four Arkansas nursing homes. Planned and lobbied for reform of nursing home legislation. Delivered speeches and workshops on nursing home reform and consumer protection for the elderly.
