Cary has spent over 25 years working in higher education in the fields of facilities management, planning, and design and construction. He currently serves as the Assistant Vice-Chancellor for Facilities Management and Planning at the University of Colorado Denver (CU Denver), where he oversees the planning, design and construction, and facilities management functions for the University. He assumed this role in November of 2022. In his 24 years at CU Denver, Cary has held a variety of positions supporting the Denver and Anschutz Medical campuses including Chief Planning Officer for the University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus, Executive Director of the Office of Institutional Planning for the Denver Campus, and Director of the Office of Real Estate and Facilities for the Denver Campus. While at CU Denver, Cary has been involved in the acquisition of four properties for CU Denver (totaling over 800,000 SF and exceeding $350M in current value), the construction of three new facilities (totaling over 400,000 SF with a collective construction cost of $225M), and numerous sizable and complex renovation projects.

Cary has participated in seven campus master plans between the Auraria Campus, CU Denver and CU Anschutz, and served as Project Director for the 2017 CU Denver Campus Master Plan.

Cary earned degrees from the University of Virginia (BA in Environmental Sciences) and Virginia Commonwealth University (Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning). Cary is a graduate of the 2006 Downtown Denver Partnership leadership program (2006), and the CU System Excellence in Leadership program (2019). Cary was a licensed real estate broker in Colorado for 10 years. He is currently serving on the Community Planning and Advisory Committee for Denver Public Schools.
