Tom Hootman is an architect, engineer, teacher, and author. He is the founder of Form & Flow, a building performance design consultancy for next-generation architecture. Working at the intersection of architecture and engineering, Tom helps clients achieve healthy, resilient, decarbonized buildings and unlock new value through high performance design. Tom brings over 25 years of industry experience and has experience leading integrated design within architecture, MEP engineering, and energy modeling practices. He is an early pioneer in zero energy with over 15 zero energy projects, including the NREL RSF and the new Denver Parks & Rec zero energy office pilot project now under construction for the City of Denver.

Tom has authored and co-authored several leading zero energy publications, including “Net Zero Energy Design,” published by Wiley, “A Guide to Energy Master Planning of High-Performance Districts and Communities” with NREL and RMI, and the “Advanced Energy Design Guide for Small to Medium Offices – Achieving Zero Energy” with ASHRAE and the Department of Energy. Tom is also passionate about inspiring the next generation of architects and serves as an adjunct instructor at the University of Colorado, Denver, where he teaches sustainable systems. He is also an instructor for DOE’s new Solar Decathlon Professionals training program.
