Even the concept of a closed-plan office today seems unacceptable if not wildly unimaginable. Most office employees likely don’t know what a closed office even looks like. And why would they? The seismic shifts in workplace design have illustrated just how fleeting a cultural movement can be in a relatively short period of time. 

In case you missed it, the new “final” word on the much-maligned open-plan office was delivered in early July, the results of a study by Harvard researchers. Predictably, the findings revealed gaping holes in communication effectiveness and productivity of companies utilizing open-plan office spaces.

In his seminal 1998 work “The Information Paradox,” author John Thorpe pinpointed the difficulty in justifying the real business benefits of information technology spending. Business owners know they have to utilize emerging technology, even if identifying and measuring its value can’t always be fully realized. Hence, the paradox.
